DanicaDanica Sue Patrick is an American former professional racer. She is the most accomplished woman in American open-wheel car racing in history. Her victory at the Indy Japan 300 was her first victory. In 1998, she dropped out of high school and moved to England to continue her career. Patrick participated in Formula Vauxhall, Formula Ford and Formula Ford before returning to the United States in 2001. In 2002, she raced in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races in conjunction with Rahal Letterman racing. Patrick was a Toyota Atlantic Series racer for the following two seasons. Her best result was when she finished third in championship standings in 2004 when she became the first woman to earn a pole position in the series.She first competed in the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2005. She earned three pole positions, equaling Tomas Scheckter's record of poles in a rookie season. She was awarded the 2005 IndyCar Series Rookie of Year. She continued to grow through Rahal Letterman Racing (2006) as well as Andretti Green Racing (2007). In 2008, Patrick followed up her Japan victory by finishing sixth overall in the driver's standings. Her performance improved to finish fifth in the standings for drivers the following season. It was her highest performance at the Indianapolis 500 and a career-high for Patrick. Patrick's overall performances slowed during 2010, but she still managed two-second-places at oval tracks before stepping away from IndyCar after the 2011 season to focus solely on stock car racing.
